United Synagogue Burial Society¶
The United Synagogue is the largest Orthodox synagogue grouping in the UK, with member congregations across London, the South East, and several other English cities. Its Burial Society runs the chevra kadisha, the funeral arrangements, and the cemetery operation for US member synagogues, including the cemeteries at Bushey New, Waltham Abbey, and others. The Funeral Expenses Scheme is the US's standing arrangement: for eligible members, the scheme covers the standard funeral arranged through the Burial Society, including burial at Bushey New or Waltham Abbey, transport, tahara, and rabbinic service. Additional charges may apply for some other cemeteries and for extras such as memorials or stone-setting. [source: theus/burial-2026-05-02.html]
For a US-affiliated family, the first call after a death is the synagogue or the Burial Society direct. The Burial Society then takes the practical lead on timing, coordination with the registrar, and the funeral itself.
